About Us
The Stage is a Madison, Wisconsin–based residential interior design studio led by Beth Houlihan, working with clients locally and beyond.
Our work is rooted in the belief that space shapes how we feel and live each day. Through a thoughtful, supportive process, we create calm, layered homes that honor both function and beauty—spaces designed to hold real life with ease.
We value trust, clarity, and genuine connection throughout the design journey.
From early concept through installation, every detail is guided with care so clients feel supported, understood, and at home in the process itself. The result is not just a beautiful interior, but a deeply personal environment that feels grounding, lasting, and entirely your own.
Beth’s Story
Hi and welcome—I’m Beth, founder of The Stage.
I grew up in Madison, left for New York in my twenties, and spent over a decade working in fashion. That time shaped how I see color, proportion, texture, and the way emotion lives inside design. I’ve always been drawn to art, and interiors became the place where everything I love could come together.
Outside of work, I’m a mom, a reader, and a homebody who also loves to travel. I’m grounded by movement, quiet mornings, and a good cup of coffee. I once lived alongside Hare Krishna monks, an experience that shaped how I think about energy, intention, and environment. Sustainability and low-toxic materials matter deeply to me, and I’m always happy to explore those choices without pressure.
My approach starts with people, not rooms. I care about how you live, what feels grounding, and what feels overwhelming. I believe space shapes us — our moods, our nervous systems, our sense of ease. I’m drawn to pattern, color, texture, oversized lighting, and vintage pieces with history. I want homes to feel functional and beautiful, but also calm. Layered. Like they can hold you.
While I have a deeply rooted and intentional process, I don’t design from a “formula” or chase trends. I start by listening. My goal is always to create a space that feels deeply personal to you— a home that supports how you want to live, now and over time. Thank you for being here.
Our Guiding Principles
Color outside the lines
Trust your instincts. The most beautiful spaces come from bold, intuitive choices — the ones that feel a little unexpected.
Invest in craftsmanship
Quality matters. We honor the work of artisans and timeless materials that age with grace and carry a story.
Stay true to the process
Great design unfolds in layers. Our process — from concept to styling — is rooted in clarity, organization, and open communication.
